چکیده

Cytological studies on the sporulation process of Clostridium perfringens have been limited by the fact that the organism sporulates very poorly on most laboratory media. Attempts to promote extensive sporulation of this organism have met with little success in the past (Simmonds, 1915; Adamson, 1918; Jahlons, 1920; Headlee, 1931; Bethge, 1947). Some investigators (Hobbs et al., 1953) have had to resort to procedures lasting up to seven weeks in order to obtain spores. Recently, however, a medium was described (Ellner, 1956) in which sporulation of C. perfringens takes place rapidly and quantitatively. This medium readily permits serial observations on the cytological changes which occur during sporulation of this organism. This paper summarizes cytological observations made on C. perfringens during its sporulation cycle.

Identification and characterization of sporulation-dependent promoters upstream of the enterotoxin gene (cpe) of Clostridium perfringens.

Three promoter sites (P1, P2, and P3) responsible for the sporulation-associated synthesis of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin, a common cause of food poisoning in humans and animals, were identified. Nested and internal deletions of the cpe promoter region were made to narrow down the location of promoter elements. To measure the effects of the deletions on the expression of cpe, translatio...

Genome-Wide Transcriptional Profiling of Clostridium perfringens SM101 during Sporulation Extends the Core of Putative Sporulation Genes and Genes Determining Spore Properties and Germination Characteristics

The formation of bacterial spores is a highly regulated process and the ultimate properties of the spores are determined during sporulation and subsequent maturation. A wide variety of genes that are expressed during sporulation determine spore properties such as resistance to heat and other adverse environmental conditions, dormancy and germination responses. In this study we characterized the...

The Agr-like quorum-sensing system regulates sporulation and production of enterotoxin and beta2 toxin by Clostridium perfringens type A non-food-borne human gastrointestinal disease strain F5603.

Clostridium perfringens type A strains producing enterotoxin (CPE) cause one of the most common bacterial food-borne illnesses, as well as many cases of non-food-borne human gastrointestinal disease. Recent studies have shown that an Agr-like quorum-sensing system controls production of chromosomally encoded alpha-toxin and perfringolysin O by C. perfringens, as well as sporulation by Clostridi...
